Hana-chan: The Social Robot Redefining Emotional Care – A Special Showcase from the Abu Dhabi Health Summit

Discover how Peter Julius and Public Intelligence are using GROOVE X's LOVOT ("Hana-chan") as an advanced low-arousal therapeutic tool in Danish primary care.

Hana-chan: The Social Robot Redefining Emotional Care – A Special Showcase from the Abu Dhabi Health Summit

In an era where healthcare systems across the globe are under pressure, frontline social workers and caregivers are constantly seeking tools to enhance the quality of patient care without losing the human touch. Enter Hana-chan, a social companion robot traveling all the way from Tokyo to healthcare settings in Denmark to explore a new frontier in welfare technology.

During a demonstration, Peter Julius, CEO and Partner at Danish innovation consultancy Public Intelligence, shared how this 4-kilogram autonomous robot is helping reshape frontline caregiving.

Technology Built Purely for Connection

Unlike industrial or functional home robots designed to clean floors or automate chores, Hana-chan belongs to a breed of social companion robots known as LOVOTa portmanteau of "Love" and "Robot", developed by Tokyo-based startup GROOVE X.

Beneath her soft, warm exterior lies an impressive engineering setup:

High-Powered Computing:** Powered by 10 internal computers (CPUs/GPUs) that process environmental data in real time. Smooth, Expressive Movement: Driven by over 20 internal engines and actuators that allow her to lift her wheels, extend her arms, tilt her head, and make subtle eye contact.

Advanced Sensory Network:** Equipped with more than 50 sensors, including capacitive touch sensors across her body, thermal imaging, and a 360-degree vision camera located in her top "Sensor Horn".

When placed in a room, Hana-chan operates with complete autonomy. She scans her surroundings, identifies people who are willing to engage, and moves closer using gentle sounds and non-verbal cues. If someone pets her, speaks to her, or hugs her, her onboard machine learning algorithms recognize the positive reaction. Over time, she tailors her unique personality specifically to the people she interacts with most.

A Tool for Low Arousal and Frontline Caregivers

In Denmark, Public Intelligence and partner healthcare institutions have been testing LOVOT across primary care, dementia care facilities, and special education environments.

As Peter Julius explains, the goal isn't replacing human workers or chasing raw efficiency. Instead, it’s about capacity with quality.

"If you are a pedagogue or a social worker working in the front line, and you have this type of technology, you can use it as a tool to get more done. It's not about efficiency, but it's about if you feel happy and low arousal, you can sort of do better."* Peter Julius, CEO & Partner, Public Intelligence

In clinical research, interacting with LOVOT for just 15 minutes has been shown to reduce cortisol (stress levels) and boost oxytocin, the hormone associated with bonding and trust. For residents with dementia or high-arousal behavioral states, Hana-chan acts as a calming bridge, allowing caregivers and pedagogues to de-escalate tension and create moments of comfort.
